Interview Attire for for Gents
Some things haven't changed. Your best investment when interviewing is a dark suit. And what better example than our President Obama. That solid, corporate look is still a must. Many employers now feel that "corporate casual" has gone too far. If you dress for your interview like you're going to a company picnic, the interviewer can only expect that you will dress more casually when you get the job. Let the employer inform YOU attire is less formal.
I am not going to tell you that one or two faux-paux's will eliminate your chances of getting to a second interview. Just consider that your competition might know better.
And I won't assume you know all of this, so I'll just spell it out.
A dark suit that fits well - Navy blue or dark gray
Light colored shirt - Preferably white or cream
A conservative tie - Check for stains
Hair - Short and cleancut - Some industries might tolerate a longer hairstyle on an interview, but why chance it? Streaks or sections in unusual colors are not acceptable.
Dark socks - That match each other and the suit
One ring.
Nothing grandiose. Remove your earrings unless they
are invisible to a pair of 45 year old eyes.
Little or no jewelry -
Clean nails
- Any attempt to justify dirty hands or nails is futile.
And while we're at it....
A clean handkerchief
-
One that "looks" clean as well and not
the
one you just used to clean your windshield.
Dark shoes
-
The first thing I notice is if they are polished.
A simple thing. But dirty shoes send a message that you
do not put your best foot forward for an interview.
Cologne and aftershave - Little or even less.
And by the way, now is not the time to show off
a tattoo or a piercing! Keep it covered!
